Ivory sweet, renaissance gold,
This prison is fit for a king, or so I’m told.
The arching tower that touches the sky,
Is a gilded cage made of lies.
Through the glittering bars, on a velvet duvet,
I am exposed, I am afraid.
I sing a song for my food and keep,
Then I look through my chains and I weep.
You invested so much in my sorrow,
That you made me a cage for my pain.
You have locked me away from tomorrow,
And that’s where I’ll remain.
Everyone smiles at the yellow bird,
Who is loved by the Queen, or so I’ve heard.
Everyone smiles as it flutters and shrieks,
“Help me one of you featherless freaks!”
I remember the world outside my cage.
I remember now why I feel this rage.
This gilded creation was made to chant,
“You’ll never escape, you can’t, you can’t; you can’t.”
You invested so much in my sorrow,
That you made me a cage for my pain.
You have locked me away from tomorrow,
And that’s where I’ll remain.
And that’s where I became the creature that I am.
The royal affair is tired of me.
I am food for the cat, or so I believe.
The King, Queen and Cat are ready to dine.
Am I a snack to be had with the wine?
Til this mortal cry travels the earth,
And recognized is my fatal worth.
My feathers will shed in fury, in flight.
Til all I can see is the color of light.
