Работа над альбомом началась, как вспоминали участники группы, в трудный для неё период, когда пришлось разорвать отношения с прежним менеджментом, а участие в Black Sabbath стало превращаться в рутину («Гастролируем, пишем, записываемся — снова и снова». — О. Осборн). На состоянии музыкантов стал сказываться и образ жизни, что отчасти отразилось в тематике альбома («Кilling Yourself to Live»).
Тони Айомми вспоминал, что после Vol.4 у него наступил творческий кризис; он уже впал в отчаяние, когда возник «…этот рифф, который спас Black Sabbath» и после которого остальные песни стали появляться одна за другой.
Для работы над материалом группа арендовала замок в Уэльсе; музыканты утверждали, что он был «с привидением» (Билл Уорд утверждал, что видел призрак, выпрыгивающий из окна; после этого он, ложась спать, всегда брал кинжал с собой в постель). Группа расположила аппаратуру в подвалах, где, как говорил Айомми, сама атмосфера способствовала появлению новых идей. Для Оззи Осборна альбом стал творческой вершиной: он говорил, что ни до, ни после, голос его не звучал так хорошо, особенно в гармонии с самим собой.
Оформление
Для оформления обложки альбома была использована картина «Изнасилование Христа» («The Rape of Christ»), автор которой, Дрю Струзан, позже занимался оформлением кинопостеров, работал над дизайном первых «Звездных войн».

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - the fifth studio album by British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released on December 1, 1973, and marked the transition to the complexity; group arrangements of saturated synth sounds (and even strings - in the last track), a characteristic of progressive rock. Participation in the recording of the plate took Rick Wakeman, keyboardist Yes. The album rose to # 4 in the UK Albums Chart, and to # 11 on the Billboard 200
Work on the album began, as recalled in the group, in a difficult period for her, when I had to break off relations with the former management and participation in the Black Sabbath began to turn into a routine ( "touring, write, write - again and again." - A. Osborne ). In the state of musicians and began to affect the lifestyle that is partly reflected in the theme of the album ( "Killing Yourself to Live»).
Tony Iommi recalled that after Vol.4 he suffered a creative crisis; he was in despair, when there was "... the riff that rescued Black Sabbath» and after which the rest of the songs began to appear one after another.
To work on new material the group rented a castle in Wales; the band claimed that he was "a ghost" (Bill Ward claimed to have seen a ghost, jumping out of the window; then he went to bed, always took a dagger to bed). Group is located in the basement of the equipment, where it is said Iommi, the atmosphere contributed to the emergence of new ideas. To become creative pinnacle of Ozzy Osbourne's album: he said that neither before nor after, his voice did not sound as good, especially in harmony with itself.
Decor
To make an album cover painting "Rape of Christ» ( «The Rape of Christ») was used, in which the author, Drew Struzan, later engaged in registration of Movie Posters, worked on the design of the first "Star Wars".

Hard riffs alternated with acoustic-jazz refrain uses apocalyptic imagery, but the main theme song - a sense of the group in relation to the music business in general, and still management in particular ( "... People who have crippled you / You would like them to burn in the fire ... ").
«National Acrobat». Midtempo prog-blues track, built on a complex, ornate riff - continues the theme begun in «After Forever»: it is a philosophical meditation on the meaning of life with religious overtones. Lyrics (as noted later Butler) completely refutes the popular belief in what was then the music press that Black Sabbath, though, raise the "high" threads having "narrow mind".
